That’s my home office in the picture. I used to love that space, I’d revel in the warmth I felt when sitting there. Everything was cozy, comfortable… I’ve grown to hate it.
I want a change. I want better. I want dual monitors and natural light and… I want this.
I’ve decided to make changes, to renovate, but I’m unsure as to the best way to utilize my space. TransparentSmoke has definately not generated enough income to follow in Joel’s footsteps… yet! But I do deserve better.
Follow me as I embark on the renovation of a lifetime for the regular computer user. This is no $1000.00(cdn) a month per seat office, but I hope to recreate the feal of Joel’s offices in my own home with just a few thousand dollars.
Renovations will encompase a new server room, lan cables, power, and desk space for 6 workstations. Help me make the best of the space available. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Remember when commenting all upgrades must be able to be completed for less than $5000.00 total cost.

Current Office Layout
Should we include prices of material and two to five different layouts so that you may choose which one will suite you the best? Also adding that what if want to host a LAN party, should you not include room for two or three empty workstations?
Ok, see thats people thinking already. I need a Lan room. Or room for a lan.
I’m guessing that there is not much I can change about where the machines are. What I’m looking for is good solid advise about how to set them up where they will be.
Call up Paige from “Trading Spaces”. She’ll hook ya up.
you have to paint thoose walls, and at business depot they are selling huge glass tables called the matrix for 399.Two of theese sets could support 6 stations and a whole lots more. organization is key, get all the cds oganized in racks (games/software/backup/porn) if you in to that.
I’ve seen book cases transformed in to printer, copier, scanner stations.
Just leave the bookcase a 1 1/2 feet away from the wall.
I hope you don’t have carpet, cause cruising from station to staion would suck ass. For a room the size you could possibl use snap together wood panel flooring costing $250. For the chairs you might want to check out ikea, but do not buy wooden put together chairs. check out the office chairs they are a great deal. walmart has a leather oversized computer chair on for 149.
We have a great thing in our office which i really suggest you do.
We have a fooseball table in the middle of our room. The ones with a glass(plastic) cover. all food goes on the table and cleaning is easy because we always have the urge to play so the table must be cleared.
now about the natural light try halogens workshop lights.
You must want the full spectrum cause staying down there so long must make skin go gray.
they sell the bulbs called grow bulbs 10$ a pop. simulates real sun.
maybe you can grow a oregano down there too.
Peace1
